Contiguous Shifts is a feature that some agencies use to making clocking in and out easier for caregivers. A contiguous shift occurs when two shifts are scheduled back to back for a single caregiver/client pairing. For example, a client might have a 10am - 2pm homemaking shift that is followed by a 2pm - 6pm personal care shift for the same client. If this feature is enabled the caregiver will only be required to clock in for the first shift and clock out for the second shift.
Contiguous shifts have a few important things to note:
- The feature is limited to 3 back to back shifts or 72 hours whichever happens first. After meeting this threshold the caregiver will be required to clock in and out for the next set of contiguous shifts.
- This does have implications for reporting for Live In clients as it can cause display issues on the Task Report.
- For agencies that have the feature enabled but have clients that they do not want to use contiguous shifts for should sperate shifts by one minute to prevent contiguous shifts on those clients.
Medicaid & Contiguous Shifts
Many Medicaid and VA programs do not allow contiguous shifts as they require a distinct clock in and clock out for each shift. If you want to use contiguous shifts partner with the Customer Success team to check for compliance concerns.
